Me me me me meeeeee!

See this one floating around quite a bit, so thought I’d take a crack at it.

Hardback or trade paperback or mass market paperback?

I prefer trade.  Hardbacks are okay.  I’m not much of a fan of mass market because the type is so small.  However, I recently read and few and realized they smell different.  Have you ever noticed?  It took me back to my teens when I used to devour Christopher Pike and Sweet Valley High.  I had forgotten that smell.

Amazon or brick and mortar?

I get a lot from Amazon, but I actually prefer going into a store.  There’s nothing like browsing through thousands of books looking for that lost gem, sipping hot chocolate and trying to keep your bored preschooler in line.  Bliss.

Barnes & Noble or Borders?

I’m a die-hard B&N fan.

Bookmark or dogear?

BOOKMARK!  Dogear is sacriligious.  And I actually fussed at my uncle the other day for laying a book down open, spine up.  It was one of mine.  I think I scared him.

Alphabetize by author or alphabetize by title or random?

Random.  I tend to put books together by subject, genre, or whether I’ve read them or not.  It’s a bizaar system, but it works for me.

Keep, throw away, or sell?

I tend to keep.  But I’m quickly becoming addicted to BookMooch.

Keep dustjacket or toss it

Keep!

Read with dustjacket or remove it?

I do tend to remove it.

Short story or novel?

Novels.  I’m not much for short stories.  Although I’ve read more the last few years that I used to.

Collection (short stories by same author) or anthology (short stories by different authors)?

It’s a toss-up.  I like them both.  I probably read more anthologies though.  I love the ones edited by Ellen Datlow and Terri Windling.

Harry Potter or Lemony Snicket?

‘Arry Potta!  All the way.  Lemony is cool and all, but after a few chapters I start to get annoyed with his tone.  He can be kind of…well…obnoxious.

Stop reading when tired or at chapter breaks?

When tired usually.  Sometimes I try to hold out for a chapter break, but when the book starts falling down and loosing my place I tend to give it up.

“It was a dark and stormy night” or “Once upon a time”?

I like a bit of both actually.  In the same story is really nice.

Buy or Borrow?

I have a bad habit of buying.

New or used?

Doesn’t matter.  It’s all words.

Buying choice: book reviews, recommendation or browse?

Recommendations and browsing most of the time.

Tidy ending or cliffhanger?

Doesn’t matter.

Morning reading, afternoon reading or nighttime reading?

It’s all good.

Standalone or series?

I like both.

Favorite series?

Harry Potter, Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series, the Vampire Diaries Andi’s got me going on, Jasper Fforde’s Thursday Next books, Little House on the Prairie, The Chronicles of Narnia…

Favorite book of which nobody else has heard?

I can’t think of any.  Except maybe The Neverending Story.  I don’t know many people who have actually read the book, most have only seen the movie.  The book is way better.

Favorite books read last year?

The Book Thief, Twilight and New Moon by Stephenie Meyer, Pride and Prejudice, The Woman in White, to name a few.

Favorite books of all time?

Oh dear!  Um…let’s see.  Twilight  by Stephenie Meyer.  The Book Thief by Markus Zusak.  The Princess Bride by William Goldman.  The Neverending Story by Michael Ende.  The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald.  A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith.  To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee.

  1. Ugh, I forgot Thursday Next when I did this meme. I love those! And, yeah, Lemony Snicket can be obnoxious, but I still love him. Great job on the meme.

  2. The too have a bookmooch addiction/facination! Oh, and Twilight and New Moon were AWESOME!

  3. I only discovered that Neverending Story was actually a film adaptation. I should probably try and get a copy, eh? Great going on the meme.

I was addicted to Christopher Pike when I was younger.

  4. I love to see the various reactions about dogearing books :)

  5. LOL on scaring your uncle about laying the book done open!! I'm sure I kept my copy of Neverending Story that I loved as a kid. I really should read it again someday, it's been years and years!!

  6. Loooove this meme. Will be posting it later today.

  7. Great answers! I'm going to play this weekend.

  8. I am definitely a bookmooch addict! I tend to want to keep nearly all my books, though, so it is tough weeding. I had never realized that mass market books smelled. I will have to check this out, but I will have to be careful no one spots me doing this, eh!

  9. I am so with you on The Princess Bride!! Excellent book!!

  10. Just give you a book, right?
I remember liking A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, but it's been so long ago, I really don't remember much about it. Maybe I need a re-read.
One of my all-time favorite books is "Love Is A Wild Assault" by Elithe Hamilton Kirkland. It is a biographical novel. I may join the Bookmooch and give away a copy of it.
