A bookish day.

After the pain and annoyance of going to the dentist today (I’m cutting a wisdom tooth. At 28. I’m a late bloomer.) it was SO nice to come home and find BOOKS waiting for me!!  Of course, I’m SO excited.  Doesn’t take much when books are involved.

twilight.jpgI received 4, but was only expecting 3. Last week I finally broke down and ordered Twilight by Stephenie Meyer because New Moon , the sequel, came out last month and I have been dying to read it. I loved Twilight so much, I’ve already read it twice in less than a year, and couldn’t wait for New Moon! Incidentally, isn’t that a great cover?  I really love it. The innocence of the young hands holding the apple, the perpetual symbol of tempation. Really ties into the book nicely I think. I also got, since Amazon is so sweet to give you free shipping for orders over $25, The Haunted House by Charles Dickens, et al.

I am really excited about The Haunted House. Why?

On Christmas Eve, a party of friends descends on a purportedly haunted country retreat, charged with the task of discovering evidence of the supernatural. Sequestered in their rooms for the holiday, the friends reconvene on Twelfth Night at a great feast and share their stories of spectral encounter. “Conducted” by Charles Dickens and counting Elizabeth Gaskell and Wilkie Collins among its contributors, The Haunted House examines quintessentially Victorian themes–sex and longing, nostalgia and loss–in ways that continue to resonate today. Ingeniously conceived and written, and spiked with flashes of Dickensian humor, this volume is a strange and sheer delight.

And all three of these will fit for my RIP challenge!

boleyn.jpgOh, yeah, the fourth, surprise, book. Simon & Schuster, those lovely lovely people who sent me The Thirteenth Tale (God bless them) sent me the new Philipa Gregory novel The Boleyn Inheritance!  I loved The Other Boleyn Girl when I read it several years ago, as well as The Queen’s Fool.  I have The Constant Princess (somewhere) but haven’t read it yet.  I wonder if I should read it first or go ahead with this one.  I was reluctant, because I wasn’t as impressed with The Virgin’s Lover as I was the first two.  I wonder if she might not be spitting these out so fast the quality is lacking?  We’ll see.

  1. I will be curious to see what you think of the new Gregory book. It is out in Britain and I am not hearing good things so far…

  2. I've got to get my hands on The Haunted House! That sounds wonderful.

FYI – I got my wisdom teeth taken out at 28 too. I say it's a perfect excuse to indulge in a lot of milk shakes :)

  3. Great books, even better considering the whole dentist thing! Its been a long time since I've had wisdom teeth issues…come to that its been a long time since I've had wisdom as well…but I remember them well. Hope you feel better soon.

  4. It is always nice to come home to books when you have had a not so pleasant day! Thy all sound great, but I am going to have to look for The Haunted House in particular!

  5. Ugg, I still wanna read Twilight SO BAD!

  6. Ron

Reading through your posts makes me want to be a better writer…and I shall.

    Thank-you.

  7. Twilight is amazing!! I cannot praise it enough. I have New Moon but I am holding off from reading it until I have a completely free weekend to just sit down and immerse myself in Forks. From what I've heard, it's great, too.

I can sympathize with your wisdom tooth pain. I have impacted wisdom teeth and they need to be removed in a bad way – they are causing so many problems. I've been avoiding it but now that I'm 28 – they have got to go :)

    Hope you feel better soon!

  8. Oh no Kailana! But somehow I am not surprised.

Iliana, I was shocked, but he wants to leave my wisdom teeth alone. They don't hurt (well, only where it is breaking through my gums) and they are coming in straight. I was worried they were impacted. I am relieved. I'd rather have them pulled later than cut out now! Ouch!

    Thanks Carl!

Danielle, I think I'm going to have to start The Haunted House soon. I read in the intro and I'm intrigued by the premise.

Andi and I WANT you to read Twilight SO BAD!!!!

Why thank you Ron, that made my day!

Amelia, I can not wait until I can sink my teeth (haha snort) into Twilight and New Moon. I wanted to wait until I finished The Woman in White, but I'm having a hard time being patient!!

Quote Admin, wow that is SO cool! I will have to post on it later today.

  9. Congrats on winning Blog of the Day! ;)

  10. I really enjoyed Twilight, as well. It had a smart, kind of Joss Whedon feel to it. I will be looking for the next one.

  11. Argh, I am so jealous that you have a copy of The Boleyn Inheritance already, you lucky thing!

I am going to have to read Twilight sometime. The cover has always appealed to me and I keep hearing people rave about the story.

  12. Firstly, I notice that the Twilight book is one in the group of new covers using parts of women's bodies. Arms, legs, hands, ears… All that, but not the whole face. I like to keep a watch out for cover art trends. A few years ago it was feet and shoes.

Secondly, The Haunted House is so much fun. I got it 2 years ago and it makes for great Halloween reading. It's on my R.I.P. list.

  13. I loved Twilight and I just started New Moon last night. I had put New Moon at the bottom of a library stack to save the best for last, but then last night I just couldn't take it anymore knowing that it was sitting there waiting for me. So I stayed up way too late reading, overslept and was late for work this morning. Oh well – all for a good cause :) Hope to finish it tonight or tomorrow.

And sorry to hear about the wisdom teeth. I was an early bloomer in that sense – had to have them all out when I was 16. And I even had an extra one for some freakish reason – so yes, that was 5 out all at one time. I shudder at the memory.

Glad to hear you are enjoying your recent book deliveries :)
