So…what did I get?

During my lunch hour today, I went to my favorite little UBS.  I am SO excited about my favorite little UBS because they are moving to a big, huge, gimongous new building at the end of the month!!!  YAY, more room for books!

Anyway, I got some realllly good looking books today:

  • Maus I
  • Maus II
  • The Little Friend by Donna Tartt
  • Jack of Kerowen by Charles de Lint
  • The Secret History of the Pink Carnation

Maus, I wasn't too sure of, but I remembered that (I think) Andi liked it, so I peeked at the first few pages.  Before I knew it I had read about 10 so I figured instead of staying there and reading it in the aisle, I'd take it on home.  They had both I and II so I got them both.  I know Andi and Amanda liked Donna Tartt's Secret History and since The Little Friend was only $4.50 in an excellent hardback (doesn't matter though, as I had over $100 in credit, but still!) I snapped it up.  It's freaking huge!!  I have liked all of de Lint's stuff I've read so I got this one, a retelling of Jack and the Beanstalk.  And the Pink Carnation looks like a good historical/mystery/something-or-other book.

And I feel a little better now, especially thanks to your sweet comments.  At least the trying part is fun ;)

  1. Did you catch House last night? I don't think I've come across an episode that I didn't like.

  2. Oooh, you got some good stuff. Maus is great. I'll actually be re-reading it this weekend because we're gonna talk about graphic narrative in my Pict Books class Monday and I'm leading the discussion. Good times!

The Secret History was fab, so I'm lookin' forward to your thoughts on The Little Friend.

  3. I DID see House. And it was as yummy delicious as always. That kid made me cry, he was soooo cute with those big blue eyes. And I loved the interaction between House and Wilson over the poker game. It might have been my most favorite episode this year…so far that is.

I can't wait until the 2 parter in May. Charles S Dutton is going to play Foreman's dad!!!

  4. Andi, I thought that was you who mentioned Maus! What I read of it the store looked pretty cool. Doesn't hurt I'm so interested in Holocaust stories either. And family histories. Should be good. That discussion does sound like fun, wish I could go!

I hope to get to The Little Friend soon. It was bigger than I expected! I wish they'd had a copy of The Secret History, but they didn't :(

  5. Maus I and II rocked my world. They really are brilliant, and made me see the Holocaust in a personal and intimate way. Which makes it that much scarier.

  6. I used to own both Maus books, but I sold them and now I wish I hadn't (typical). I have not read The Secret History, but I have read The Little Friend–it was good, but…I don't want to give anything away. I look forward to seeing what you think of it. I am feeling very in the mood to go to a used bookstore, too. I am trying to not spend so much money on books, and this is a good solution to still being able to buy them.

  7. Danielle, I'm really excited about Maus…I'll probably read it next. The first pages I read really gripped me. I love my UBS, especially since they take books for credit. I cleaned out a BUNCH of my old books so I haven't "bought" a book in awhile thanks to them.
