Title: The Luxe

Reading Level: Young Adult

Hardcover: 448 pages
Rated: 3.75/5

Pretty girls in pretty dresses, partying until dawn.
Irresistible boys with mischievous smiles and dangerous intentions.
White lies, dark secrets, and scandalous hookups.
This is Manhattan, 1899.

I admit; I was a bit of a book snob about this book, something that I strive not to be, but sometimes, I just can’t help it!  As usual, I really bought it more for the cover and after trying to read it THREE times and not being able to get into it, I was ready to give up.  But so many of by book buddies on Twitter were raving about the book and pushed me to read it, so I gave it one more chance.  I had to push myself past page 50, but once I got there something clicked.  I am so glad I did because I was SO WRONG ABOUT THIS BOOK.  It’s like Edith Wharton married to Gossip Girl and its LIKE CRACK.  Or CHOCOLATE which is, you know, better for you.

It is what it is. Don’t go in expecting grand literature or historical accuracy.  But if you want a quick, engrossing, page-turner of a book, if predictable because oh my gosh, I totally saw the ending coming, THIS is your girl.  She’ll treat you to backstabbing socialites, illicit romantic trysts in the stable, on the kitchen table and anywhere else they can find a spot, loveless engagements, and sumptuous descriptions of dresses, fabrics, foods, and décor.

And really, have you seen a more gorgeous cover???  Give it a try next time you need a mindless bit of fluff to get you by.  It’s totally worth it.

  1. Yeah, probably. I want to know what happened to…uh…one of the girls. Don't want to give away any spoilers!

And thanks, I thought that was rather funny myself!

  2. Hee!

I can't decide if this is a good review or a bad review. What I do know is that it made me giggle and what can be wrong about that? I actually have all three books in the series and haven't had a chance to get to them yet but I hope to at some point.

  3. 😀

It's good! I really enjoyed the book. There were a few things that annoyed me, like historical accuracy, but I figure it doesn't really matter – it's just a fun read! I look forward to hearing what you think once you get to them!

  4. I am looking forward to getting my hands on this one, too, Heather. It looks like a delightful bit of reading. You are so funny, too. "IT'S LIKE CRACK" sounds just like something I would say! Are you running out to get the next one?

  5. I read this a few weeks back. Because of the cover. It is just fab! But was left totally meh-ed by the book. Predictable, as you said, and I wasn't grabbed by any of the characters. It was a teeny bit fun but I much prefer my Georgette Heyers 🙂

  6. Hello! Like you, one of the reasons I didn't pick up this novel from bookstores is the cover. Yes, the cover is indeed gorgeous, but I found myself put off by it. Reading your review, I think I'll read this one soon.

  7. I've seen this before but been something of a book snob myself about it. But if you tell me there's something of Edith Wharton to it AND it's like chocolate, well then…I think I must have it!

  8. I loved these books and found them to be very addicting once I started them – I too thought 19th century/early 20th century Gossip Girl when I read them 🙂

  9. Great review! I've been a snob about it a little too, I admit, even though I was attracted to the covers. I've been putting off reading it since the first one came out!

But since I started blogging, I've seen those everywhere and the opinion is usually good, so I bought the first one last week! 😀 I'm glad to see you enjoyed it; I'm hoping I will too! I've read a lot of fluff since I decided to go back to university ; I need it in order to survive the brain-eating serious stuff I have to study during the semesters :/

  10. JUST got this from the library and I am SO excited!!! They have Rumors on the shelf, too…I must just have to check that out. I think I can finish both and my other regularly scheduled adult books in three weeks. 😉
