More baby news

August 29, 2007 Books 8

8/29 5:23 PM – STILL nothing.  Went to the dr. this afternoon and everything looked fine.  The dr. estimated that the young master will be between 8.5 and 9 lbs.  Whew!  I am dialated to 1 centimeter.  I was SO disappointed for I was sure I was further than that.  :(

I started the most charming little book this morning.  I needed a light book to take with me into the bath this morning.  Since Kristin Lavransdatter weights as much as this baby and Dracula isn’t exactly small either, I took The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo.  It is absolutely the cutest book!  I’ve already devoured over 100 pages.

Baby News

August 27, 2007 Books 7

brother3.jpg8/28 9:51 am – Still nothing.  A few contractions, but nothing productive.  Sigh.

Watching Pride and Prejudice, the Firth version.  Delightful!

Since I can’t find any “little brother” shirts in my area, I’m working on making my own.  I’ve made 3 possibilities so far (one is pictured to the side) but I just can’t get what I want yet.  I think that one is my favorite so far, but something is missing.  Sigh.

8/27 9:38 am- Nothing yet.  I figured since I’ve been so quiet I should say something.  I’ve been taking it pretty easy, resting a lot, reading (I read over 50 pages of Kristin and read 2 chapters of Dracula this weekend!!), watching movies (Under the Tuscan Sun was better than I expected, Flags of Our Fathers fantastic, and Beerfest is AWFUL!), and nesting some.  I was up 3 hours last night with contractions (and boy they hurt!), but nothing really happened except I lost some sleep.  I’m going to update this post as things happen, so watch this space for more news!  There is a full moon tomorrow ;) *fingers crossed*PS: The new header is in honor of the RIP challenge.  That, and I was ready for something different!

August 21, 2007 Books, Lists, Reading Challenges 18

At last!!!  The challenge I’ve been waiting all year for!  I can’t tell you how excited I am for this one.  Last year’s challenge was excellent and this year’s is looking to be even more fun!  Carl, as always, has found new and exciting ways to make the challenge interesting.  His Perils are spicing things up and I’m still trying to decide which one too do.  I think I’m going to go with Peril the First, but see if I can’t fit in Peril the Second.

Here is the list of books I’m going to choose from, and boy is it a big one!

  • The Hobbit by Tolkien
  • The Lord of the Rings by Tolkien
  • The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova (reread)
  • Tantalize by Cynthia Leitich Smith
  • War for the Oaks by Emma Bull
  • The Fetch by chris Humphreys
  • The Dark Mirror by Juliet Marillier
  • The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch

  • The Summer Tree by Guy Gavriel Kay
  • Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier (reread)
  • Into the Green by Charles de Lint
  • Waifs and Strays by Charles de Lint
  • Widdershins by Charles de Lint
  • The Wild Wood by Charles de Lint
  • A Red Heart of Memories by Nina Kiriki Hoffman
  • Past the Size of Dreaming by Nina Kiriki Hoffman
  • The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman
  • The Subtle Knife by Philip Pullman
  • The Amber Spyglass by Philip Pullman
  • A Certain Slant of Light by Laura Whitcomb
  • The Faerie Path by Frewin Jones
  • The Naming by Alison Groggon
  • Dracula by Bram Stoker (reread)
  • Frankenstein by Mary Shelley (reread)
  • The Book of Lost Things by John Connolly

and probably more I haven’t found on my shelves yet!  I can’t wait to get started.  I’ll probably have a late start, since I’m due to have this little man soon, but I’ll also have lots of time on my hands since I’m on maternity leave now!  Woot!

Thursday Thirteen

August 16, 2007 Lists, Miscellaneous 6

I liked this Thursday Thirteen theme that Tanabata did today so I am totally going to steal it for me.  There are LOADS of things I am missing lately ;) but I’ll keep it to thirteen.

Thirteen Things I am missing (or not) lately:

  1. I am not missing the heat!  Oh my goodness but it’s hot!  Triple digits today.  Thank God for the cold front that is supposed to come through this weekend!!!
  2. Pregnancy.  Or, rather, NOT BEING PREGNANT! I don’t so much mind the pregnancy as all the comments I get when I walk down the hall at work.  I don’t know what it is, but all of a sudden everyone is my best friend and asking questions or making comments they really have no business making.  “I’m only having one baby!”  “Yes, I am pretty big.”  “I’m due in September and no, it’s really NOT that far away.”  “Yes, it is hot and it is making miserable, thank you for reminding me.” Grrrrr….
  3. I miss regular clothes.  I miss non-pregnancy clothes.  I want to be able to wear my cute shoes again.  I want to be able to button a pair of pants again!
  4. Speaking of shoes, I want to be able to see (and touch!) my feet again!  I miss my feet!
  5. I miss baths.  I love to take baths, especially nice cool ones in the summer.  It’s my best reading place too.  But I can’t get up out of the bathtub without help anymore!  :( But don’t worry, I am showering, giggle.
  6. My grandma.  As time comes nearer for the baby to get here, I miss being able to talk to her about it.
  7. Gardening.  Growing up I used to help my grandpa with the garden. I had a special board on the tractor just for me and my tiny butt.  The garden wasn’t small either; we’re talking tomatoes, corn, green beans, vidalia onions, cucumbers (I love a cucumber right out of the garden, with nothing but salt on it, YUM!), watermelon, cabbage, turnips, turnip greens…  I love the smell of freshly turned red dirt.  I love the smell of tomato plants.  Now is about the time to start harvesting things and I even miss snapping the green beans and helping Mama can them.  I even miss the awful smell the house would get when she would make pickles.  Great.  Now I feel homesick.  I’ll have to post a picture of me riding with my Papa on the tractor.  I look just like the girl kiddo and am all of 4 years old.
  8. I miss school.  With all the kids gearing up for back-to-school, I am finding how much I miss doing that myself.  I loved buying new pencils, notebooks, backpacks, and more.  Maybe I’ll go buy myself some anyway.
  9. I miss getting the new syllabi too.  The anticipant of getting all those new books and learning new things.  Can you tell I was a total geek?  I just loved school.
  10. I miss caffeine.  I was never a heavy drinker of the stuff, but I like to have one every now and then.  Especially Dr. Pepper.  How I long for a Dr. Pepper.  But since caffeine does weirdo things to my heart rate when I’m pregnant, I’ve tried to avoid  it.  I’d like a really cold Coke from the fountain please!
  11. I never thought I’d say it, but I miss my oil skin.  This baby has dried me up like sandpaper and I am SO not used to being dry.  And I am not a big lover of lotions.  Although, someone gave me this fantastic almond honey lotion stuff that is fantastic!  It smells divine and isn’t greasy at all.  It just goes right in and disappears.  I love it!
  12. I miss being able to brush my teeth and not get sick.
  13. I miss going to the bathroom alone.  Little Miss thinks she has to go with me every. Single. Time. I. GO.  And when you’re drinking about 100 fluid ounces of water a day, you go.  A LOT.  It gets annoying.

So there you have it.  Maybe next week I’ll try to do a list of good things.  Counteract the karma.

I got it

August 16, 2007 Books, Miscellaneous 4

The hand, foot and mouth thing the kiddo had last week.  I have it.  :(  I feel okay, but I am not loving these little beastly bumps on my hands and feet.  Especially the feet.  As you can imagine, I have to walk on them, and little painful bumps are not condusive to walking.  Not to mention the extra 35 lbs (give or take) I’m carrying around.

Tomorrow is my last day at work and I’m SO excited about that.  I also only have a little over 3 weeks (3 weeks people!!!) until the new kiddo gets here and I am SO nervous about that.  I just want to get it over with already!!! My reading is petering out, because all I can think of is all the things I need to get done before he gets here.  At least I’ll be off work for awhile before, hopefully I get all this nesting done.  I’m afraid I’m going to have to set aside Kristin Lavransdatter (which very sad for me, as it is VERY good and I’m already 60+ pages into it, but too much for my tired little brain) for the moment.  And definitely set aside Storyville.  The writing is horrible!  Which is a shame, as it is an excellent premise for a book.  The writer and his two kids set out on a road trip to some of the strangest named cities/towns/hamlets in America to find out exactly WHY they have such strange names.  But it’s written in a very stream of conscious, vernacular style that is just trying my patience.  I have a feeling a lot of YA, childrens, romance fluff reads are in my future.  At least until the new kiddo gets here.

The air conditioner is fixed, for now.  Sad news is it probably won’t last much longer.  The thing is 25 years old and seriously needs to be replaced.  Huzzah!  I’m. So. Happy. About. That.  (Not!)  But at least the house is somewhat cooler!! Wahoo!

Weekend plans

August 10, 2007 Books, Miscellaneous 7

Well, I hope your weekend will be better than mine.  My very grumpy kiddo has *voice drops to a whisper* Hand, Foot, and Mouth disease.  I hope, hope, hope I can get some reading time in, but more than likely I’ll be comforting my sick, very, very, very, very grumpy, 3-year-old.   I am optimistic that we’re over the worst part though.

Did I mention she’s very grumpy?

And, of course, we get to celebrate our 7th anniversary on Sunday!  We already exchanged presents because we are big dorks who just Can. Not. Wait. I think I already said that I got him the Ultimate Matrix Collection on HD DVD.  Well, he got me the special 50th anniversary edition of The Lord of the Rings, which is absolutely gorgeous, and the special edition of The Hobbit.  I have coveted both for quite some time so you can imagine my excitement.   I’ll have to read them very soon.  I’ve read The Hobbit before, but I’ve never read The Lord of the Rings.

I’m such a loser.

I also have a new addiction.  I have always loved word games and puzzles.  Now, I have discovered a website that is dedicated to one of my most favorite word games; cryptograms!!!  Cryptograms are SO much fun!!!  I just can’t stop playing.  It’s very bad.

In my hands

August 9, 2007 Books, Miscellaneous 10

I finally have Eclipse in my hot little hands!  Guess what I’ll be doing this weekend!  Woot!

Went to the doc yesterday and everything looks good.  Sounds like he wants me out of work soon, which works for me!  It also sounds like Wesley is going to be at least 8 pounds, if not a little more.  Ellie was too, so I’m not surprised.   And, I guess you can see from the change in my header, that I definitely have babes on the brain!

It’s another scorching hot day here again today.  And our air conditioner still isn’t putting out very much cold air.  Miserable!  The house was 78 last night.  Unexceptable!!  Must call repair man!

I’m seeing that a lot of people must be thinking about the RIP challenge coming up soon.  I’m getting a lot of hits on posts from last year.  I’ve been thinking about it too and hope I can participate!  I’ll be out of work, but I’ll also have a newborn to worry about.  I’ve already started thinking about which books to read, so I’ll hopefully be ready.

Yes!

August 7, 2007 Books, Miscellaneous 12

Guess what?!?!

I read over 100 pages of an actual BOOK yesterday!!!  All is right with the world again!  Is it just me, or do you feel weird if you don’t read something for a few days?  I didn’t pick up a book all weekend and by yesterday I was feeling desperate.  Luckily I had a book in my bag, so I took it out at lunch time and devoured about 40 pages.  Then I read about 60 more last night while the hubby watched stupid wrestling.  I hate wrestling.

Just saying.

But oh, I feel so much better!  And the book, it’s soooooo good too.  It’s one I’m reading for Estella, part for review, part for author interview.  I’m so excited about it too, because it is by one of my favorite YA authors.

My anniversary (7 years, omg!) is Sunday.  I had to tell the hubby what I wanted, but I’m getting something good.  I’ll post pics Sunday.  I got him The Ultimate Matrix Collection on HD DVD.  He’s been wanting that for awhile.  And, if I can find the energy, I may fix a special supper.  Or we might just go out!  Again, if I find the energy.  4 weeks 6 days to go and I’m really feeling it.  So exhausted.  And sooooo damn hot!  It’s supposed to be 98 today (heat index of 100-105 though) and it’s SO “NC” freaking humid.  Yes, we have our own brand of humidity.  You can cut it with a dull spoon.  To make it all the more smashdorable, something is wrong with our air conditioner.  It’s “working” but not well enough.  The unit is probably older than (or at least as old as) I am (I’m 29), so I’m just praying it doesn’t die before the summer is out.

That would be a catastrophe.

On a bittersweet note; today would have been my dad’s 47 birthday. Happy Birthday Daddy!
